Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield, PG Trae Young seeing pro draft stock rise

Welcome to the Wednesday edition of our Oklahoma DieHards morning roundup, where we take you through all the biggest headlines around Oklahoma athletics.

Increasing stock

Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has built his stock dramatically throughout the draft process. Now, the NFL Network believes that Mayfield has improved his stock more than any player in the draft process.

Pro Football Focus rates Mayfield as the No. 1 overall prospect in the draft, and for good reason. He rated as by far the top rated quarterback during the season. He won the Heisman Trophy after throwing for more than 4,600 yards and setting the all-time record for passer rating.

Other headlines:

  • DieHards beat writer John Shinn broke down tight end Grant Calcaterra’s role in the offense, and how his role changes now that tight end Mark Andrews is gone to the NFL.
  • At least one national analyst is extremely high on Kyler Murray’s ability. 247Sports analyst Barton Simmons wrote that Murray has the ability to do Mayfield-like things on a football field if he wins the starting job.

Lottery pick

Former point guard Trae Young is moving up NBA draft boards heading toward the June NBA draft. The consensus All-American is projected to go No. 8 overall to the Chicago Bulls in the most recent Sports Illustrated mock draft.

Young led the nation in both points and assists per game. He’s the first player to ever accomplish that feat. If on the Bulls, Young would play next to former Providence point guard Kris Dunn. He could be a good fit in that position.

Other headlines:

  • Former linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo will attend a workout with the Houston Texans on Saturday, according to the Houston Chronicle. He is considered to be a Day 2 pick.
  • Softball pitcher Paige Parker has been named USA Softball Player of the Week for the third time in her career. She gave up no runs in 11 innings against No. 15 Baylor.
