The move has long been expected, though only confirmed on Friday. McLaughlin had been granted his release from Oregon State in December, and by February it was reported that McLaughlin would be transferring to UCSB.
“Being a student-athlete is a lot of work and there are some challenges that I’ve been faced with that have impacted me and kept me from being able to compete to the best of my ability in a way that would help my team win games,” McLaughlin said in a statement OSU released in December.
“This was an important decision that I did not take lightly and I apologize to the fans that have been supportive and treated me so well, even through tough times. It is my hope that even without specific details you can still try to understand that this was about so much more than basketball.”
On the court, McLaughlin was one of the few bright spots for Oregon State. His 58 3-pointers were the most of any Beaver freshman in school history. He started 35 of 38 games, averaging 9.3 points and 3.3 assists per game.
UCSB went 23-9 this previous season, finishing second in the Big West.
