Oregon coaches are counting on Ugochukwu Amadi to develop into a leader in his senior year.
Amadi is projected to start for the Ducks this season. Oregon coach Mario Cristobal wants the senior safety to be a leader on the field for the Ducks. Thus far, Amadi is showing coaches they can count on him in the leadership department.
“He’s outstanding. He’s the quarterback of the defense, the traffic cop. He directs it all, lines guys up,” Cristobal said, per the Register-Guard’s Ryan Thorburn. “Some of the best things about really good defensive players are obviously understanding how a scheme works, but they also understand if a particular call is made and the offense runs a play that can expose it. They understand the weaknesses as well, and they can rally more efficiently to the football.”
Oregon will have an experienced duo in the secondary this season. Fifth-year senior Mattrell McGraw is expected to start at the other safety spot opposite of Amadi.
