Top-ranked 2019 basketball recruit R.J. Barrett announced on his USA Today blog that he will reclassify to the 2018 class and enter college a year early.
Barrett, a native of Canada, wrote that his decision to reclassify stewed in his mind over the last year.
“Really, it’s been a thought of mine for the last year, but I wanted to wait and see how the season would go and how school would go and when everything went well it became more and more real so I made the decision to go ahead and do it,” Barrett said. “I can’t say that there was one thing that tipped my decision to reclassify; but it was more a collective decision based on the whole year.”
Barrett also said he’s on track to graduate in 2018 and his recruitment remains intact.
“Not too much will change with my approach to the recruitment; we’ll just do the visits a little sooner than we probably would have if I stayed in 2019,” Barrett said. “I haven’t set anything up yet for sure with visits, but we’ll get to that.”
Barrett is considering Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Oregon, UCLA, Michigan and Texas. He also mentioned USC has sparked his interest recently.
