Stanford’s Sean McGorty, who despite achieving plenty of success had never won a national title, needed a grand finale Friday to conclude an illustrious collegiate running career.
That happened on a rainy course at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., with the senior pulling out the NCAA title in the 5,000-meter run at the track and field championships.

McGorty’s late kick enabled him to finish in 13 minutes, 54.81 seconds, 0.22 seconds better than Syracuse’s Justyn Knight. In third was Stanford junior Grant Fisher, who won the 5,000 title in 2017.
