Even without its 3-run, ninth-inning rally to beat Washington on Sunday to clinch its first Pac-12 title since 2004, Stanford’s enjoyed a 2018 baseball season worthy of accolades. Among the many reasons what the Cardinal achieved was so noteworthy is that it came under a first-year coach, David Esquer.
Fittingly, Esquer was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in a vote of the league’s other coaches on Thursday.

Esquer led Stanford to a 44-10 record, 22-8 in the Pac-12, as well as the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Baseball Tournament that begins Friday. It’s his second conference coach of the year honor to go with one he earned in 2001 with California, where he coached from 2000-17.
