Before the start of their first preseason game, the New England Patriots honored former Syracuse coach Dick MacPherson.

MacPherson actually left Syracuse to take the head coaching job at New England in 1990. He spent just two seasons with the Patriots and was fired after going 2-14 in 1992, but the late coach left a lasting impressing throughout the New England area. He coached UMass from 1971-1977 and led Syracuse during the program’s very successful late 1980s run.
He posted an overall record of 66-46-4 in 10 yards with the Orange. From 1987-89, Syracuse went 29-6-1 under MacPherson. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
MacPherson died Tuesday at 86 years old.
