Syracuse quarterback Mo Hasan announced his plans Tuesday to transfer from the Orange football program, according to Syracuse.com.
Hasan found himself behind Eric Dungey, Zack Mahoney and incoming freshman Tommy DeVito this fall, but the depth chart wasn’t the reason Hasan decided to transfer. When he came to Syracuse last spring, he arrived with the expectation that his academic scholarship would become an athletic one by this summer.
That plan never came to fruition.
“Although there was nothing guaranteed, we were under the strong impression that the academic scholarship would be shifted toward athletic after my freshman year,” Hasan wrote in a text message, per Syracuse.com. “Especially having had other scholarship opportunities with schools and with my performance on the field.”
Hasan was a “premium preferred walk-on” last season and shared the role of scout team quarterback with fellow freshman Rex Culpepper. Coming from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Hasan was a 3-star prospect out of high school.
The sophomore-to-be is looking into junior college options. He said he plans to return to Division I football for the 2018 season.
