TCU has soared into a lot of playoff projections, so it was a matter of time before the Horned Frogs got matched up with Alabama.
Sports Illustrated’s latest bowl projections have TCU making the playoff field and facing the No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl. Alabama is one of two SEC teams in SI’s playoff field with Georgia facing Penn State.
Allstate Sugar Bowl – New Orleans (Jan. 1)
Alabama vs. TCU
Rose Bowl – Pasadena, Calif. (Jan. 1)
Penn State vs. Georgia
The Frogs are actually 3-2 all-time against Alabama, but the Tide took the last two games in 1974-1975.
Alabama is the unanimous No. 1 in the polls thanks to its dominance against inferior teams so far this season, and it probably gets some credit for making the playoff three years in a row. But TCU might actually have the more impressive resume, according to ESPN’s Strength of Record metric.
TCU was also a consensus playoff pick in ESPN’s latest projections. The only debate was whether the Frogs should be No. 3 or No. 4. SB Nation and CBS Sports, meanwhile, each have the Frogs in a New Year’s Six bowl.
The first real set of College Football Playoff rankings come out Tuesday, Oct. 31. That’s when we’ll see if the committee feels the same way about TCU as the media does.
