Joel Lanning, Iowa State’s beloved linebacker and part-time quarterback, has been named a first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America.
Also on the FWAA first team from the Big 12 are Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, Orlando Brown, and Mark Andrews. From Oklahoma State, James Washington made the top team. The Texas Longhorns landed punter Michael Dickson and defensive back DeShon Elliott on the list.
It’s a massive honor for Lanning, whose absence from other All-America lists has been noticed by fans and media alike. This is Lanning’s only first-team nod. Every other player from the Big 12 honored on the FWAA’s first team has landed on other first-team lists.
Lanning made headlines last offseason though his position switch from quarterback to linebacker. It’s a change that not many can make in a single offseason. Lanning made the switch and contributed in a huge way to Iowa State’s successful 2017 season. He made 110 tackles, including 5 sacks. owa He also played some quarterback along the way.
His efforts were nothing short of inspirational, and it’s nice to see him honored.
