Kliff Kingsbury’s position as the heartthrob of Big 12 coaches might be up for grabs.
New Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley is just 33 — the youngest FBS coach in the nation. And some have said his chiseled looks could rival those of Kingsbury, the 37-year-old Texas Tech coach, for the unofficial title as the hottest coach in the Big 12.
But at Big 12 Media Days on Monday, Kingsbury said he’s glad to see Riley arrive in the league. And he would willingly cede his position to Riley if given the opportunity.
“He’s a great-looking guy,” Kingsbury said with a churlish grin. “I would actually like him to take that title. He could make some shirts about it and run with it.”
Kingsbury’s looks have led to comparisons with actor Ryan Gosling. Soon after Kingsbury’s arrival before the 2013 season, a cellular telephone company placed a giant advertisement on the side of a billboard with the coach’s picture on it. It read “our coach is hotter than your coach.”
Throughout the day, Kingsbury answered questions more typical for a media day session, including a barrage about his job security. But the question about Riley caught him by surprise. And it made him want to get back to talking about what his team has to do in 2017 to save his job.
“Let’s just talk about football,” Kingsbury finally said.
