Nic Shimonek put up solid numbers behind center in his senior year for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and his stock is quietly rising in the NFL draft.
True, he’s not in the upper echelon of quarterbacks in this draft class. Baker Mayfield, Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen form a clear top tier. Even after those players, Mason Rudolph and Mike White will most likely get drafted before Shimonek.
But the former Texas Tech quarterback did put up 3,963 yards and 33 touchdowns in his senior year, and those aren’t small numbers. He’s met with at least 20 NFL teams, and he could be a late-round steal for a franchise willing to take a chance.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com labeled Shimonek as his “sleeper alert” for the quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL Draft.
“There are not too many true sleepers at QB in this draft, but Shimonek fits the bill,” Zierlein wrote. “He has good size and an impressive arm. He has the ability to go from read to read and does an adequate job of understanding when to look for the deep throw.”
While Zierlein acknowledged there’s a good chance Shimonek goes undrafted, there’s a good chance that Patrick Mahomes’ successor may wind up in a camp somewhere and surprise a team.
The NFL Draft begins Thursday, April 25.
