Texas Tech will add some experienced size to its front court next season.
On Monday, Tariq Owens, a graduate transfer power forward from St. John’s, committed to Chris Beard and the Red Raiders, per a report from 247Sports’ Evans Daniels.
“Just all of the relationships,” Owens told Daniels. “One of the coaches down, there coach [Al] Pinkins was on the staff at Tennessee. When I got my release, he was someone that stuck out because we have a real good relationship from when I was there.”
The 6-foot-11 Owens picked Texas Tech over Maryland.
As a junior, Owens averaged 8.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots per game, which each served as new career-high efforts. With Zach Smith’s time at Texas Tech now finished, that interior productivity could prove to be a welcomed addition to a Red Raider front court with a role to fill.
Owens, who will be eligible immediately, told Daniels that he believes he can definitely help Texas Tech from day one.
“I think they have some of the same concepts we had at St. John’s. I think I can help them. I’m going to work with them and develop and work on shooting more consistency and attacking the rim from the three-point line in and get stronger.”
