Texas Tech football will open the 2018 season with a neutral-site matchup against Ole Miss, the school announced Friday.
The Red Raiders will play the Rebels at NRG Stadium in Houston for the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff. It will be Tech’s third game in Houston in four seasons. The Red Raiders played LSU at NRG in the Texas Bowl following the 2015 season, and they’ll go on the road to play Houston in Week 4 this season.
“We’re excited to return to Houston and take part in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff,” Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a statement provided by the school. “The support of Red Raider Nation helped set a new Texas Bowl attendance record in our last trip to Houston, so we look forward to NRG Stadium being filled with scarlet and black once again to kick off the 2018 season.”
Ole Miss leads the all-time series with Texas Tech 3-2. The two teams last met in the 2009 Cotton Bowl, a 47-34 win for the Rebels.
It’s one of Texas Tech’s most impressive non-conference opponents since they played a home-and-home series with Arkansas in 2014-2015.
The Red Raiders finish up a home-and-home with Arizona State this season. They have Arizona, N.C. State and Oregon on their future schedules as well.
