Memphis is indirectly responsible for the new period of success Texas Tech is experiencing. Former Red Raiders coach Tubby Smith left the program to take the head coaching job at Memphis following the 2015-2016 season, allowing Chris Beard to take over in Lubbock.
In his second year as coach, Beard led the Red Raiders to the Elite Eight, the deepest run in the NCAA Tournament in school history. Meanwhile, Smith was fired by Memphis in March. He later was hired as the head coach at High Point.
Texas Tech went 27-10 last season. Memphis was 21-13.
