The Texas Tech Red Raiders are traveling to Austin, Texas to take on the Texas Longhorns, and everything is on the line.
The Longhorns are 6-5. They’ve already made their bowl game. There isn’t too much more to be gained there, other than the potential for an eight win season in Tom Herman’s first season.
For Texas Tech, this game means everything. The Red Raiders are 5-6. A loss here means missing a bowl game, something that can’t happen if Kliff Kingsbury hopes to keep his job. It isn’t a stretch to say that this is a do or die game for Kingsbury and the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech-Texas preview, keys to the game
- There’s no more room for errors. You’re more than likely going to have to play near perfect on offense against this Texas defense. They get after the passer well, and they can cover exceptionally. That’s not to mention stellar linebacker Malik Jefferson. They’re simply too talented on the defensive side of the ball for errors, especially on the road. On the defensive side of the ball, they aren’t going to score a million points, but they will run the clock, and your depth, straight into the ground. You can’t drop passes, you can’t miss blocks, you can’t miss assignments. The Red Raiders aren’t as talented as the Longhorns, there’s no room for errors against a more talented squad.
- Get off the field on third down. The Texas Tech defense can’t afford to stay on the field for a long time against Texas. They have some depth at running back and enough speed at wide receiver to be able to ground you into the turf. This is a game that’s very easily loseable if you allow Texas to burn the clock. You aren’t going to be in front of this team if you can’t get off the field. If you can win 3rd down, and hold the Texas offense to around 17 points, this is a very winnable game.
- Show some fire. At some point, someone is going to just have to take over for Texas Tech if the Red Raiders are going to win. You can scheme for a team like this all you want, and Texas Tech has had some good game plans in the past. The bottom line is someone is going to have to inspire someone, because this team has the look of an exhausted team that just wants the season to be over at times. It can’t be like that against Texas. There’s still a bowl game to play for.
- Pressure Sam Ehlinger. Sam Ehlinger is going to make some plays at times, but he will make some serious freshman errors if you force him into it. The Red Raiders cannot afford to leave him alone in the pocket. They’ll need turnovers if they want to win, and the easiest way to force turnovers is to force the freshman into mistakes. If they can’t get off the field on third down and force the Longhorns into mistakes, this will be a long night for Texas Tech. The odds are stacked against them, but there’s definitely still hope of a victory and a bowl game.
