Some NBA scouts don’t seem as high on former Texas Tech guard Zhaire Smith as many draft analysts.
Sports Illustrated’s Jack Fischer and Jeremy Woo asked 10 scouts for their anonymous thoughts on this year’s draft class. When asked which player was the most overhyped, Smith was one of the names that came up.
From Sports Illustrated:
“Three months ago it was Trae [Young], but now it’s probably Zhaire Smith, because he’s arguably a first–round pick and he’s getting mocked 20 picks higher.”
“I don’t know what else he does besides being athletic. I think he could end up being a rotation player.”
“I think there’s a lot of questions with Zhaire but there’s a big variance there, talk about elite bounce and spectacular athleticism, but he’s so new to playing on the wing.”
Smith’s stock has skyrocketed over the last few months. He signed with Texas Tech as a 3-star recruit out of high school. He averaged 11.3 points, 5 rebounds and 1.8 assists as a freshman. He declared for the draft somewhat unexpectedly, but has often been projected as a lottery pick. Some scouts apparently don’t believe that hype, however, saying Smith still needs time to develop.
We’ll find out how high Smith’s value is when the 2018 NBA Draft begins Thursday at 6 p.m. CT.
