Ariel Atkins was selected by the Washington Mystics with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft Thursday.
Atkins, a standout for the Texas Longhorns, played four seasons in Austin and was a star in all of them. She made the Big 12 All-Freshman Team in 2015, was a Second Team All-Big 12 selection as a sophomore and was a First Team All-Big 12 honoree as a junior and senior. In 2018, she was named an Honorable Mention All-America selection.

In her senior year, she averaged 14.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. The 5-foot-11 guard shot 42 percent from the 3-point line as a senior. Atkins was a Big 12 All-Defensive Team selection in 2017 and 2018. Her career free-throw percentage of 83.1 percent is fourth-best in Texas’ history.
The Mystics are getting a very capable scorer and defender. Atkins will become the 18th player in Texas history to play in the WNBA.
