The late Augie Garrido’s presence will be felt at the 2018 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
Texas coach David Pierce, who usually wears No. 22, has switched jersey numbers for the College World Series and will don Garrido’s No. 16.

The idea came to mind after Pierce saw pictures of Garrido wearing No. 2 in the 2003 College World Series to honor ex-Texas baseball player Woody Woodman, and prior to finalizing the decision, Pierce sought the blessing of Garrido’s widow, Jeannie, according to the Austin American-Statesman’s Danny Davis.
Garrido, who passed away in March at the age of 79 after suffering a stroke, coached at Texas from 1997-2016. Throughout that 20-year stretch, Garrido guided the Longhorns to 824 wins, eight College World Series appearances and two national championships. Prior to arriving in Austin, Garrido also led Cal State Fullerton to seven College World Series appearances and three national titles.
