Chip Kelly’s arrival should improve the production out of UCLA’s running back position. Senior Soso Jamabo figures to be the biggest beneficiary.
Kelly’s spread offense, with a heavy does of zone-read plays, should be advantageous for all UCLA running backs and in particular Jamabo.
The senior running back is already noticing the opportunity with Kelly’s offense in spring camp.
“Right now we’re just going through the installs and getting it right,” Jamabo said, per Tracy Pierson of 247 Sports. “But I feel like definitely in training camp I will have an opportunity to set myself aside and have a lot of opportunity to make a lot of plays.”
Jamabo’s been inconsistent in his first three years in Westwood. He’s compiled 1,171 rushing yards in three season with the Bruins. Kelly’s arrival could change the erratic production from the running back. He has the potential to be one of the best running backs in the Pac-12 this coming season. His skill set is a good fit for Kelly’s style. He a good runner in space and has reliable hands out of the backfield.
UCLA will have a new quarterback under center and a lack of depth at wide receiver, so it’s going to be imperative for Jamabo and the rest of the running backs to perform well for the Bruins.
