For the past few months, the narrative of Jaelan Phillips’ hand injury has been both enigmatic and strange. The majority of reports suggested that it was a scooter accident or incident, though no details were provided.
On Thursday morning, the UCLA defensive end said it was no scooter accident.
“I got hit by a car,” he wrote on Twitter. “Don’t get it twisted.”
For football purposes, whether Phillips was hit by a car or his injury did, indeed, stem from some kind of scooter accident — and yes, it is more than possible that a car hit him while he was on his scooter — it doesn’t much matter. Either way, Phillips missed the entire spring season and will be having a second procedure on his hand.
Even coach Chip Kelly seems unconcerned, telling the media that “He was going to miss the entire spring anyways.”
Phillips is still expected to be back by the onset of the fall season.
