The start of the college football season is rapidly approaching, which means preseason polls and All-America teams are trickling in all from everywhere.
Sports Illustrated released its preseason All-America teams on Wednesday, and USC had two representatives.
Linebacker Cameron Smith was a first-team selection, while quarterback Sam Darnold was voted onto the second team.
After making a name for himself as a freshman, Smith continued that momentum last season as a sophomore. He accumulated 83 tackles, including seven for a loss, and added a sack and a forced fumble for the Trojans.
Darnold’s play down the stretch was also a key reason behind USC’s nine-game winning streak to close out the 2016 season. He threw for 31 touchdowns and 3,086 yards in 10 starts. Darnold is considered one of the favorites to win the Heisman trophy and be selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Other Pac-12 players voted as a SI’s first-team All-American were Washington State offensive lineman Cody O’Connell, Washington linebacker Azeem Victor and Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky. Washington tailback Myles Gaskin and Oregon running back Royce Freeman were named to the second team.
