Former UCLA coach Jim Mora doubled down on Sam Darnold going to Cleveland.
Mora told NFL Network in March that he believes the Cleveland Browns should draft the USC quarterback No. 1 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Former Bruins coach’s comments caught many by surprise considering that he did not endorse the quarterback he used to coach, Josh Rosen, for the No. 1 pick.
MMQB’s Peter King interviewed Mora and he further explained why he likes the Darnold-Browns pairing.
“[Darnold has] the underdog mentality that I think will fit so well in Cleveland, a franchise that’s really been down,” Mora said, per MMQB’s King.
Mora thinks Rosen is better suited in New York with either the Giants or Jets.
When it comes to Cleveland, Mora is not wrong when he says the Browns have “really been down.” The lowly-Browns are 1-31 in the last two years. Cleveland hasn’t won a football game since 2016.
There are quarterbacks who try to steer clear from the Browns. Cleveland’s had 27 starting quarterbacks since 1999. Perhaps, Mora has an ulterior motive. He wants Rosen to go to a favorable environment and based on recent history, Cleveland is not a locale that provides that.
As for Darnold, many expect the Browns are leaning toward the USC quarterback anyway.
