Virginia Tech has landed an outstanding defensive player from the Garden State to add to its 2019 class.
Nyquee Hawkins, a 4-star safety from Orange (N.J.) High, announced his commitment to Virginia Tech on Friday night according to 247Sports.
The 6-foot, 180-pound Hawkins, who is the No. 20 safety in the nation according to the 247Sports composite rankings, explained why he was drawn to the Hokies.
“I decided on Virginia Tech because of the connection I had with the defensive backs coach (Brian Mitchell) and head coach (Justin Fuente),” Hawkins said to 247Sports. “Basically, it is the whole coaching staff.”
Hawkins adds that the legacy of his position at Virginia Tech and the environment on campus were other factors.
“I love the school history of defensive backs, and the atmosphere is crazy on game day,” Hawkins said to 247Sports. “I see myself being used really versatile in their defense being used everywhere.”
Virginia Tech currently has the No. 4 class in the ACC and No. 18 nationally according to 247Sports.
