This won’t erase the disappointment for Hokies fans, but the replacement to the Michigan series is a reasonable bargain.
Two-plus months after Michigan canceled a two-game series vs. Virginia Tech, the Hokies responded by scheduling Middle Tennessee for a home-and-home set in 2020 and 2021, per a team release.
Virginia Tech will travel to Middle Tennessee on Sept. 19, 2020. Middle Tennessee will visit Blacksburg, Va., on Sept. 11, 2021.
The Blue Raiders are a Group of 5 team from Conference USA. Last season, Middle Tennessee defeated Syracuse on the road en route to a 7-6 record. It also has Power 5 road wins vs. Missouri (2016) and Georgia Tech (2012) this decade.
Virginia Tech will be paid $250,000 to travel to Middle Tennessee in 2020, and the Blue Raiders will get $500,000 to play at the Hokies in 2021, per The Roanoke Times’ Andy Bitter.
Virginia Tech’s other nonconference games in 2020 include home matchups with Liberty, Penn State and East Carolina.
The nonconference slate for 2021 consists of games vs. Richmond, vs. Notre Dame and at West Virginia.
