It had never happened in NCAA Tournament history, but on Friday night, UMBC shocked the sports world.
The Retrievers became the first No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament to defeat a No. 1 seed in the first round, stunning Virginia 74-54 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. UMBC used red-hot 3-point shooting to torch the Cavaliers, who were ineffective in their attempts from beyond the arc.
An upset always gets college basketball fans stirred up, but this occasion – a first in March Madness history – had social media buzzing more than usual.

It’s one thing to knock off the overall number 1 but to win by 20? Truly incredible #UMBC

EVERY PERSON ALWAYS SAID A NUMBER 16 WILL NEVER BEAT A NUMBER 1.
JUST LIKE EVERY PERSON TOLD ME I WOULD NEVER RUN A MARATHON.
I RAN THE MARATHON. UMBC BEAT VIRGINIA.

This is Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak being broken.
A 16 beats a 1. Unreal.

Kansas State is happy. How much did they scout UMBC?

Meanwhile, the UMBC Twitter account spent the entire evening trolling everyone who had picked against them, which, well, seemed like everybody in the country. But this simple, two-word tweet basically summed it up.

For UMBC, it was a night to remember. For Virginia, it was a shocking conclusion to a season that should have ended with them in the Final Four.
