Wake Forest-Texas A&M preview
By: Connor Riley/Rolando Rosa
Texas A&M is going bowling for the ninth consecutive season, facing off against Wake Forest in the 2017 Belk Bowl from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Aggies will be doing so without head coach Kevin Sumlin, who was fired last week.
And although the program has already moved on and scored a big coup in hiring Jimbo Fisher, this game will be played under interim head coach Jeff Banks. Interim coach situations are by their very nature tenuous, and it’s always an open question whether the players will be 100 percent focused on the game at hand. We’ll have to see whether that is the case for A&M or not when they take the field on Dec. 29.
The Aggies’ opponents, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, enjoyed a solid 2017 in which they went 7-5, including a 4-4 mark in the ACC. The Demon Deacons’ best win of the season came just a few weeks ago when they beat a ranked NC State team 30-24 at home.
Keith Ford leads Texas A&M with 11 rushing touchdowns and Trayveon Williams is second with seven rushing touchdowns. Christian Kirk has the most touchdown receptions (7) for the Aggies.
Landis Durham has a team-best 8.5 sacks for Texas A&M. Armani Watts (4) and Tyrel Dodson (3) have combined for seven interceptions.
Dodson also has tallied 5.5 sacks.
Texas A&M is 2-2 in its last four contests, beating New Mexico and Ole Miss while losing to Auburn and LSU.
Meanwhile for Wake Forest, quarterback John Wolford has had a strong season.
Wolford has amassed 35 total touchdowns (25 passing, 10 rushing) with 2,792 passing yards and 615 rushing yards.
Matt Colburn has scored six rushing touchdowns and Duke Ejiofor has recorded seven sacks for Wake Forest.
Essang Bassey and Justin Strnad lead Wake Forest with three interceptions apiece.
Wake Forest is 2-2 in its last four games, defeating Syracuse and N.C. State while losing to Notre Dame and Duke.
The first Belk Bowl was played in 2002 under the name of Continental Tire Bowl. The game officially became the Belk Bowl in 2011.
It became a match-up of ACC and SEC teams in 2014, when Georgia defeated Louisville. Past MVP winners of the game include Nick Chubb and Dak Prescott.
Last year’s matchup saw Virginia Tech comeback from a 24-0 deficit to beat Arkansas 35-24. The first Belk Bowl was played in 2002 when Virginia beat West Virginia 48-22.
