Washington State recently had a change in leadership atop its athletic department, with the school hiring Pat Chun from Florida Atlantic in January to replace the departed Bill Moos. Moos had been the Cougars’ athletic director since 2010 before surprisingly leaving for Nebraska in October.
An internal audit released Thursday indicates things weren’t as great as they seemed at WSU, particularly on the financial side.
“The environment within Athletics … did not support a culture of compliance or fiscal responsibility,” the audit stated, per the Associated Press.
WSU is currently dealing with a $67 million budget deficit, fueled by an annual deficit of $9 million, down from as high as $13 million. Renovations to Martin Stadium, where the Cougars play football, was a key contributor to that deficit but the audit showed that issues related to discounted and complimentary tickets at football games also factored heavily.
