West Virginia game day is an unofficial holiday. On home football Saturdays, the area around Mountaineer Field becomes the most populated in the state of West Virginia.
West Virginians take their game day seriously. And as such, Morgantown has some great spots to eat when you’re in town to catch the Mountaineers.
We set out to find the spots to round out your experience in Morgantown:
Best wings: Kegler’s
There are nice places to get barbecue in Morgantown, but it simply isn’t the barbecue town like other Big 12 college locales. What you will find in Morgantown are plenty of places to get top-quality wings, however. And located just a short drive from West Virginia’s campus, Kegler’s has a decent shot for best restaurant in town.
Kegler’s menu is deep — the Texas dip sandwich is a personal favorite — but its wings are unmatched in Morgantown. As an added bonus, if you come on the right day, you can catch the Dana Holgorsen’s or Bob Huggins’ radio show, recorded live downstairs. Make sure to get your table early for that though, as the place gets jammed.
Honorable mention: Mario’s Fishbowl, Clutch Wings
Best burger: Tailpipes
The undisputed Morgantown burger champion is Tailpipes, located down High Street just a few steps away from campus. What separates Tailpipes from other burger joints are the specials: Every week, the place comes out with a new limited-edition burger, giving you a reason to come back regularly. It’s a chance for Tailpipes to show off its creativity, and some of the best burgers I’ve had have been Tailpipes specials. Who would have ever thought to put mac and cheese on a burger? Even better, Tailpipes does the same thing with its fantastic shakes.
Honorable mention: Iron Horse Tavern
Best sports bar: Sports Page
If you are looking for a great sports bar, look no further than the aptly-named Sports Page. “Spage” is renowned for its brilliant happy hour on Fridays, with a wing and pizza buffet that packs students into the joint. That’s to say nothing of the best Long Islands in town, which are on special on Fridays. There are tons of televisions located on basically every surface in the building, and it’s a great place to bring friends, grab a few brews, play some pool and catch a game. It also has a full food menu, making it one of the more well-rounded places in town.
Honorable mention: Fat Daddy’s, Mutt’s
Best atmosphere: Mario’s Fishbowl
A West Virginia original, Mario’s Fishbowl has been an institution in Morgantown since the 1960s. True to the name, Mario’s is especially renowned for its beer served in ”fishbowls,” which make you feel like you’re drinking out of a king’s goblet. There are two locations, but do yourself a favor and go to the original on Richwood Avenue. Mario’s is always jammed on game days, and the place’s history gives it an atmosphere unmatched in Morgantown. Going to Mario’s is a tradition that links generations of Mountaineers fans. And when the Mountaineers win, as it has been for more than 50 years, it’s fishbowls all around.
Honorable mention: Black Bear Burritos, Schmitt’s Saloon
