West Virginia men’s basketball released its nonconference home schedule for the 2018-19 season on Thursday.
The Mountaineers will begin their home slate with an exhibition on Nov. 3 against Alderson Broaddus, a NCAA Division II program based in Philippi, W.Va. West Virginia will then play Buffalo on Nov. 9 for its regular-season home opener.
“We wanted to accomplish two things going into this year’s home non-conference schedule,” coach Bob Huggins said in a release. “The first thing was that we wanted to bolster our home nonconference strength of schedule by playing teams with better RPIs. Secondly, we wanted to play more weekend home games to help accommodate our fans and television partners.
“Obviously, we are excited for the Backyard Brawl to return to the Coliseum this season. Opening the season against Buffalo and what they’ve done recently is a great way to tip off the 2018-19 season. The rest of the home schedule features opponents from a variety of conferences who have done well or are predicted to do well in their league schedules this season.”
Huggins’ group hosts Valparaiso in a non-bracketed game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational on Nov. 24. West Virginia will also host Pitt, who’s coming off one of its worst seasons in program history, on Dec. 8.
West Virginia will wrap its home nonconference schedule with Lehigh on Dec. 30 before it begins its Big 12 schedule.
Conference play is scheduled to begin in January next season, while the Big 12/SEC Challenge is scheduled for Jan. 29, 2019. The Mountaineers’ full nonconference and Big 12 schedule will be released, however, at a later date, according to a release.
